School begins on Tuesday and the students will be shown a video about copyright rules and guidelines that are permissible in the school environment and are to be followed. This is a detailed video that covers all that the students will need to know. Since the ISTE NETS Standard “advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources” is one of the goals in my GAME Plan, I feel like it is great that the students will start the year off knowing about the requirements.
After they get the basic ideas about the “safe, legal and ethical use of digital information and technology” from viewing the film, they will then have the opportunity to create a GAME Plan of their own. They will monitor their plan as the term progresses.

One more free week for me and school will beging on Tuesday. I really want to start the class off my introduing them to internet saftey and then I would like to do something similar to what you are planning for your first day.
ReplyDeleteDid you find a video online that you are planning on using or is this something you have created in say powerpoint?
How will you evalute thier plan to make sure they are taking this seriously? Maybe you can have them make weekly entries as to thier progress on a blog.
Denise,
ReplyDeleteI think it is a great idea to start off by addressing copyright rules. There are many students who fail to follow the guidelines. Showing the video will help your students, because most of the time they are told what to do but never shown how to do it.

Terri,
ReplyDeleteThe video is from the school district but there is an actitvity in BrainPop that I will also be using. Also, they will monitor their GAME Plan on a weekly basis in their log until the necessary papers are signed by parents giving permission for their children to use the blog.
Victoria,
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right about addressing the rules and guidelines at the beginning of the school year and throughout as well. Modeling is the key.
Denise,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and our classmates that addressing copyright rules and guidelines in the beginning. As they complete assignments, remind them of referencing and display students' referenced work. It will serve as a reminder for students and "reward" students who are following the rules. Students like seeing their work displayed.
Are you looking to do some of the activities from Reading the Web text?

ReplyDeleteTeresa,
ReplyDeleteTeresa,
I am actually not anxious to find resources for this topic because of the many ideas from this and prior text and also from classmates. I have also seen resources on my school district website.
